Cultivating Equality: Women Farmers Driving Agribusiness Growth

March 18, 2025

Summary

Agribusiness is critical in generating jobs, driving economic growth, and feeding an expanding world population. However, women face significant barriers to accessing seeds, fertilizers, machinery, training, and financial services.

Three case studies highlight how IFC has responded to these challenges.

  • In Uganda, IFC partnered with Grainpulse Ltd. to train more than 1,200 women in good agricultural practices, increasing their productivity and tripling their crop sales revenue to $7.7 million.
  • In Côte d’Ivoire, with Cargill, IFC developed an entrepreneurship project that helped over 2,000 women launch businesses, lifting over a third of the group from poverty.
  • In Rwanda, the World Food Programme and IFC trained nearly 15,000 women farmers, forming more than 700 savings groups and increasing maize yields by 15%.

By equipping women farmers with financial literacy, technical training, and leadership skills, these projects demonstrate the economic results and social benefits of closing gender gaps in agriculture. Read the case studies to learn how investing in women leads to better outcomes for all.
