The Guidance Note on Financial Intermediaries (FIs) clarifies how IFC's Policy on Environmental and Social (E&S) Sustainability (Sustainability Policy) applies to FIs; explains how IFC's E&S requirements that flow from the Sustainability Policy and Performance Standards (PS) apply to the activities and operations of FIs, enhancing clarity on the scope of application of the IFC PSs by FI clients for higher E&S risk transactions; and defines E&S responsibilities of FI clients regarding sub-projects and sub-sub-projects and codifying sub-project disclosure commitments.
This Guidance Note builds on and replaces the original FI Interpretation note published in January 2012 and updated in November 2018
