Infection control in the Operating Theater: Is Cleanliness next to Godliness?

April 30, 2024

One of the most critical parts of a hospital is the operating theater. Put simply, maintaining a safe and clean space during surgeries – one that prevents infection spread – directly influences post-surgical outcomes and recovery. It also protects patients whose immune system is already compromised in the entire hospital.

To ensure better outcomes of surgical procedures, hospitals must work to decrease infections. What is the solution? Proper infection control policies regulating scrubbing procedures, proper instrument handling, and maintaining an aseptic environment throughout the procedure. While these things seem obvious, the devil is in the details.

This webinar covers the following:

  • What are the specific preoperative, operative and post-operative measures needed to prevent infections? For example, how and where should staff change their clothes, access to the OR, layout and routes inside of it?
  • How does OR infection control improve patient outcomes and patient safety?
  • What is the role of the operating room layout? Is there an optimal layout?

Speakers:

  • Eric Woo, Regional Director, ECRI Institute
  • Dr. Sachin Wagh, Medical Planner and Hospital Design Expert
  • Julia Khalimova, Healthcare Quality and Patient Safety Expert, IFC
